What you should know before buying from abroad
SSENSE is a Montreal-based luxury retailer that ships to over 40 countries, including all nine destinations we checked. Checkout accepts US-issued Visa, Mastercard and Amex (Amex and Discover route through PayPal), plus non-US cards, PayPal and Alipay, so payment is rarely the obstacle for expats. Express courier delivery typically lands in one to two weeks.
The honest drawback is duties. For many countries SSENSE ships DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) and the checkout price is final, but for others it ships DDU and you settle import duties and taxes with local customs on delivery. The Philippines is a known case where customs and tax are charged separately. The only reliable way to know is to look for the line "Taxes and duties included" on the product and checkout pages for your country before you pay.
Returns are workable but not free from these countries. SSENSE offers prepaid return labels only for a short list (China, Hong Kong, South Korea); everyone else covers return shipping and coordinates it with their local post. Duties and taxes you originally paid are refunded on a return. Plan for a 30-day return window and the cost of shipping an item back internationally.
