What you should know before signing up from abroad

Shopify is a fully cloud-based platform, so the actual work of building and running a store is unaffected by where you sit. You can sign up, design your storefront, add products and manage orders from Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam or anywhere else without a VPN. There is no geo-block on the admin, and your subscription bills cleanly to both US and non-US cards. For an expat keeping a US-registered business, nothing about logging in or paying for the plan breaks when you move overseas.

The honest drawback is Shopify Payments, the built-in card processor. It is only live in about 23 countries, and none of the nine we checked here are on that list. If your business is registered in Thailand, Argentina, South Africa and the like, you cannot turn on Shopify Payments and must instead connect a third-party gateway such as PayPal, Stripe (where available) or 2Checkout — which means extra transaction fees and a separate signup. Expats who keep a US LLC and US bank can still run US Shopify Payments; those who localize their business cannot.

In short: Shopify the software works everywhere, but Shopify the payment processor is tied to your registered business country. Decide early whether you are operating as a US entity abroad or as a locally registered seller, because that single choice determines which payment setup you get. The store, the apps and the support are identical either way.

Quick answers

Can I run a Shopify store while living in Thailand or the Philippines?

Yes. The admin and storefront work normally with no VPN. Only the built-in Shopify Payments processor is unavailable, so you connect a third-party gateway like PayPal or Stripe.

Will my US credit card still work for the Shopify subscription?

Yes. US Visa, Mastercard and Amex are billed for your plan without problems, and non-US cards are accepted too.

Why can't I use Shopify Payments from these countries?

Shopify Payments is only enabled in around 23 supported countries. If your business is registered outside that list, you must use a third-party gateway, which adds a small per-transaction fee.
