Where we checked
What you should know before signing up from abroad
Descript is a cloud-based audio and video editor that runs in the browser and as a desktop app for Mac and Windows. There is no regional licensing or geo-block, so an American in Thailand, the Philippines or anywhere else reaches the same product and the same free plan as someone in the US. Account creation needs only an email; no US billing address or phone number is asked for.
The one real drawback for expats is billing: Descript charges in US dollars only, processed through Stripe. Non-US cards are accepted, but your bank may add a 1–3% foreign-transaction or currency-conversion fee on top of the plan price. A handful of countries are not supported by Stripe at all, so if a payment is declined the card processor is the cause, not Descript.
Everything else behaves identically abroad. AI transcription, the text-based timeline editing, screen recording, overdub and video exports all work without a VPN. If you want to avoid bank fees, paying with a US-issued card or a USD-denominated card sidesteps the conversion surcharge entirely.
Quick answers
Can I use Descript from outside the United States?
Yes. It is a cloud app with no geo-block, so it works the same in Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and beyond, no VPN needed.
Do I need a US credit card to subscribe?
No. International Visa, Mastercard and Amex work through Stripe. Billing is in USD, so your bank may add a small conversion fee.
Will the AI and export features work overseas?
Yes. Transcription, editing, screen recording and exports all run normally from any country, just like in the US.
