Where we checked
What you should know before booking from abroad
Carla isn't a rental company — it's a marketplace app that compares live deals from Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar and thousands of local suppliers across more than 20,000 locations in 180 countries. For a US citizen living abroad that's the useful part: you can find and book a car in the city where you actually live, in seconds, from the app or the website, with no VPN and no US-only gate.
Booking is flexible — credit and debit cards both work, and US users also get Affirm/Uplift pay-over-time at checkout. The honest catch is at the counter, not in the app: the rental supplier (not Carla) almost always requires a credit card in the main driver's name to hold the security deposit, and the rental terms, insurance and young-driver fees are the supplier's, not Carla's. Affirm/Uplift instalments are US-only.
So treat Carla as the search-and-book layer: it reliably surfaces options and prices wherever you are, but read the supplier's deposit and card rules on the deal you pick. If you only have a debit card, filter for the suppliers that accept one — Carla lets you do that before you book.
Quick answers
Can I use Carla to rent a car where I live abroad?
Yes. Carla covers 20,000+ pickup locations across 180 countries, so you can search and book a car in your host city from the app or site, no VPN needed.
Will my non-US card work to book?
Yes — international credit and debit cards are accepted to book. Note that at pickup the rental firm usually needs a credit card in the driver's name for the deposit.
Do I need a credit card at the rental counter?
Usually yes, for the security deposit hold. Some suppliers accept debit cards — filter for those in the Carla app before you book.
