Where we checked
What you should know before signing up from abroad
Ancestry's core product is its genealogy website and record archive, and that side works cleanly from abroad. We loaded and signed in from all nine countries without a VPN and without any geo-block. You can register with a foreign address, and the World Explorer membership unlocks both US records and international collections spanning roughly 80 countries — the tier most expats actually want.
The one real caveat is the AncestryDNA kit. It is a physical saliva kit that ships separately, and Ancestry only delivers it to about 128 countries. Most of the locations we check are covered, but availability shifts and a few destinations are excluded, so confirm your country is on the shipping list before ordering a kit. The website subscription has no such limit — only the DNA test does.
Payments are straightforward because Ancestry runs as a global business with dedicated country sites, so both US cards and non-US international cards are accepted. As with any US card used overseas, tell your bank you are abroad so an auto-renewal charge is not flagged as fraud. If you only want records and family-tree tools, nothing about living overseas blocks you.
Quick answers
Do I need a VPN to use Ancestry abroad?
No. The website and your account load normally from all nine countries we checked, with no geo-block.
Can I order the AncestryDNA kit to my country?
Usually. The kit ships to about 128 countries, but not every destination — check the shipping list before buying.
Will my non-US card work for the subscription?
Yes. Ancestry accepts both US and international cards. Notify your bank so renewals are not flagged.
